FASHION WEEK: FALL 2011 DAY 1+2

Here are my favorite looks and shows from the week so far!

I love the mustard color as well as the mustard sequins!

Gray looks fresh- the trench is by far my most favorite piece of the season as of yet...and the fur sleeves are a big thing for the season as well.

More gray and mixed patterns and textures. Love the menswear inspired trend coming through.

Red is a very strong color that's been on the radar for awhile now. What's black, white and red all over? Wayne Fall 2011.

I like the sheer black along with the strong textural aspects done in black as well. The sheer button-up is very strong this season, and the army green is a nice colorway.

Here are my top choices from my favorite runway collections of the season!

PROENZA SCHOULER

The colorways and prints are so strong and vibrant. Love. They know what they are good at.

LANVIN

This stale mustard color is actually beautiful, there were so many other looks in the collection I loved but had to give this red dress the attention it deserves!

BALMAIN

Even though the collection is reminiscent of seasons past, you still can't kill the rocker chic look. It's a classic, and I would glady run around town in any of this.

ALEXANDER WANG

I did not include all the white looks that showed up this season all over the runways. I think if you have a great tan and excellent eating skills than white is fine, but I really don't see head to toe white translating into wearable looks. Although I do like this pastel metallic thing happening...

DAMIR DOMA

Damir Doma has been steadily rising in popularity, and this strong introduction of highlighter orange is a really eye-popping stand-out color trend among the shows. Here I am! Which is an interesting departure from his neutral collections previously.

GIVENCHY

Who doesn't love all things frilly, pink, goth, sheer, and leopard all over??! NO ONE. I want it all.

3.1 PHILLIP LIM

A very subtle and sophisticated collection for this spring season. Love the nude leather pieces!

WAYNE

The combination of black and camel is a win. Simplicity in color and form at it's best.

FASHION'S NIGHT OUT

Fashion's Night Out this year was a blast as usual! Didn't make it into the Opening Ceremony party, but what did you expect?! The line was reported to curl around blocks. SOSUME was featured at the Convent Shop party downtown and I spent the evening celebrating there and at Stella Filante, Veda and The Reformation. Even got my tarot read! White wine and champagne flowed all night!..... Can't wait for next year!

You hate it or you love it. Forever 21 is an expanding force to reckon with in the fashion industry, and now it's pulling out 4 entire floors in Times Square. It is equipped with 500 employees and over 100 fitting rooms! Located in what used to be the Virgin Records Megastore, the new space opened this past Friday and stayed opened until 2am. I don't know about you but I can't wait to go check it out!

RUNWAY REPORT: RESORT 2011

It's that time of the year when designers squeeze in that little delivery called resort...I like resort because it's like a free card. You can carry over a little bit of what was done for fall, as well as give a hint at what is to come for spring. I love that time of the year when you can pretend its summer and pull out spring pieces, but in reality, still need that coat/scarf/sweater to layer in.

Here are my fave looks from this season:

I love the color palette here, the khaki/taupe/salmon/cranberry/black/white. The outerwear and tailoring is so clean, and the cape is something I predict will become more important. The lace shorts are perfectly feminine and masculine at the same time.

The subtle color contrasts are understated and effortless, but the draped polka dot print gives the collection a fun personality.

I love me the Olsens, and as usual, everything from the Row is so wearable. I do have to disclaim my slight apprehension to their 90's vibe with the layered long dress over the shirt...but I will take that second button down dress please, thank you.

Alber Elbaz, you devil. How did you know I was in the market for python....everything?? Visor, swimsuit, dress, pumps, purse, tote, and rolling suitcase? Every look here is a major win in my book.

This collection stayed truest to its 'resort' roots, but I still really enjoy the Americana glam-ness, also the khaki/cape thing again. Like it.

This collection is sophisticated and classic is a completely current way. I love the return to true fashion icons- red, black, white, lace, and leopard. Those things just do not go out of style.

Such a majorly tres chic Parisian, It-girl collection. I love the trench and double-lapel jacket. The oversize, sheer button down also makes another appearance here.

Alexander Wang. I am really feeling the color choices here as well. This Ox Blood color is amazing, and paired with the nude are both highly approved. The deconstructed feeling to the skirts and dresses is interesting also.

After recieving several text messages from friends this morning, I found out along with the rest of the fashion/art community, that McQueen was found dead at his home. His website reads as follows currently:

"ON BEHALF OF LEE MCQUEEN'S FAMILY, ALEXANDER MCQUEEN TODAY ANNOUNCES THE TRAGIC NEWS THAT LEE MCQUEEN, THE FOUNDER AND DESIGNER OF THE ALEXANDER MCQUEEN BRAND HAS BEEN FOUND DEAD AT HIS HOME. AT THIS STAGE IT IS INAPPROPRIATE TO COMMENT ON THIS TRAGIC NEWS BEYOND SAYING THAT WE ARE DEVASTATED AND ARE SHARING A SENSE OF SHOCK AND GRIEF WITH LEE'S FAMILY.

This is a terrible, sad day for not only, but especially, aspiring fashion designers. His show is always one of the highlights of Fashion Week, and his death came to soon; we were all waiting on the edge of our seats for what was to come next. The last season was by far one of the most beautiful and inspiring collections, and his work with Lady Gaga are definitely history book worthy. On the opening day of New York Fashion Week, this season is sure to take on a somber aura as his biggest fans look back on his work and life.

Black is back. Alexander Wang's pre-fall look book debuted on style.com this week, and black has never looked so goth chic. NEWS: Model found hanged in Paris apartment

20-year-old model and fellow blogger, Daul Kim was found dead in her Paris apartment on Thursday. She had been very successful in her modeling career in the past few years appearing on several top runways. It is very sad to see someone so young and in the public eye to feel so alienated, and even with 'clues' found on her blog (iliketoforkmyself.blogspot.com), that she still was able to take her own life. When our society places so much emphasis on being pretty and being skinny and being rich, you have to remember that being happy and healthy has to come first, because those other things don't really matter in the end. Condolences to her family and friends.

STREET STYLE: "Hair, Hair, Hair... " -New York Times Article

I happened to pick up a copy of the New York Times today and found the Style section really interesting. The article chronicles the recent phenomena extreme and retro hairstyles that have more frequently been popping up around the city and Brooklyn. I love what's happening here! I have certainly also noticed some shaved bottoms/top mushroom cuts, mohawks or 'faux-hawks' and long, I-just-rolled-out-of-bed hair around the streets and parties. For a long period of time I feel like guys haven't been having enough fun with their looks- and this article brings up perfect classic rock idols from other decades, mostly the 1960's, 70's & 80's for their inspiration. Although attendance was definitely not at capacity, there were a few hardcore kids who braved the clouds and rain and partied on. The time I spent there was checking out this display put on by Converse sneakers. A few buckets of Sharpies and 2 huge canvases later, the artsy kids of Williamsburg got busy designing their very own limited edition shoe designs. I have posted some of my personal favorites of the bunch. I even included my very own design!

RUNWAY REPORT: Pre-Fall Looks

Pre-Fall is a very exciting time to play with your wardrobe! I have already started incorporating some of my new fall buys into my summer looks and it's really fun to have so many options...Especially with this summer's unpredictable weather, it's easy to look good for anything you might come up against. I decided to go through some of my favorite designer's pre-fall collections to inspire some trans-seasonal looks that will get everyone through august and september. photo credits style.com

Alexander Wang Pre-Fall 2009

There are a few things about these look that I think are great...
1. Cozying up with a comfy gray sweater and shorts, great combo.
2. Sheer/lace bike shorts- I recommend putting them on under.....everything.
3. The mens inspired loafer- easy like a flat, but a quirky edge.

1. Throwing on a classic, black blazer can finish off any outfit.
2. Exposed bra- although possibily risque in the streets of NYC, I love the bra/blazer combo.
3. Sheer bike shorts- yeah, I said put them under everything!!

This look incorporates a few other trends I'm really enjoying lately.
1. Leather jacket- also note, wear with everything!!
2. The cropped trouser- I think it's a fresh proportion and happily frees the ankle from the grips of the ever-so-popular legging...
3. Open toe shoes- even when the weather cools a bit, with the right amount of layers still looks current- (just make sure you get that pedi, girl)

And last from Mr. Wang, the prettiest little blue onesie ever!
Not much more to say- I still think rompers are chic and so easy to wear, I definitely will be wearing them into fall.

Balenciaga Pre-Fall 2009

I love the color story Nicolas Ghesquire has gone with here! The soft, neutral palette is beautiful and can be almost put in with the idea of 'winter whites'.

The color here is also great- and a touch of fur is a funky alternative to a jacket or scarf.

Two trends to play with in this look:
1. Lace! Black and nude are super sexy and can even be dressed down with some denim shorts or a jacket.
2. The ankle boot- still a staple in my wardrobe, and I think the contrast with wearing something a bit skimpy paired with a solid shoe looks great.

Rag & Bone Pre-Fall 2009

1.I love the colors in this look- again the softer hues like salmon and teal and gray are really fresh for fall/winter, don't be safe with your NYC black this fall!
2. The loafers- cute color combo as well.
3. The beanie- chunky skullcaps are a great accessory to give any outfit that fall look, and unfortunately someone stole mine from last season, so I will be on the hunt for a new one soon!

This is another easy look- I love the ankle showing and a tank top with a heavier vest works to stay comfortable on cooler rooftop nights.

This look will work when you definitely start feeling the weather change.
Beanie + Scarf + Jacket = Layered perfection
And if you get too hot.... take it all off, baby!

Chloé Pre-Fall 2009

This look is something I would wear in a New York minute!
1. Nude- best 'color' ever.
2. Leather pants- if you don't own them, buy them, if you own them and haven't been so sure about them, rock them!! Mixing the leather with feminine pieces guarantees you won't look like Tomb Raider's Laura Croft.

1. Why don't you belt that blazer?
2. And wear it with the cropped pant.

Oh look, it's a slice of nude heaven.

With their vintage-inspired looks and American Apparel duds these girls rocked out and despite the heat, they kept it looking cool.

GO SEE: Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion

If you get a chance to go to the Met soon, I would definitely recommend seeing the special exhibit, Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion. The amazing fashion display plays tribute to many famous models that have paved the path to today's industry standards. The exhibition was sponsored by Marc Jacobs and Conde Nast. I loved walking back in time with each room of the exhibit, popular supermodels dressed in the hottest looks of that decade. On a personal note, I saw a Sports Illustrated cover with Paulina Porizkova; my mother named me after her during her height of popularity in the 1980's. The impact of these supermodels in the world of fashion is undeniable and it was great to be able to appreciate all of these beautiful women who helped create designers most unforgettable looks.

STREET STYLE: Summerstage Music Festival

Where: Rumsey Playfield, Central Park, NYC

These cool kids all made it out to enjoy a beautiful summer Saturday in the park with awesome music! Breezy, colorful sundresses are a natural go to when it's hot out and these girls rocked it, (literally too)! Hats, cut-off denim shorts and rompers were also easy, chic pieces that helped fans stay cool. Chester French played a great set and even when the announcer came on to inform people the blankets had to go because more people were waiting in line to get in the venue, the crowd kept it's cool and let the good times roll.

I spotted this man on Ludlow in the Lower East Side this morning. I couldn't resist asking for a photo. His look is seriously sharp, coordinated, and patriotic. He is sporting a Michael Jackson tribute t-shirt, over a white button-up with a summer blazer on! I also love the way he has tied in his Obama campaign tote to match the colors in the shirt!! OH NO YOU DIDN'T: Appalled/Sad/Horror

I know everyone loves Rodarte for their craftsy knit pieces, and they've been the choice for many celebrities gowns for events and such. The collaboration they did with Christian Louboutin on the runway was crazy. BUT I have to say, I am absolutely appalled by this after-party for the Met's new exhibition "Model as Muse." A huge night for fashion and drama, and Metropolitan Museum celebrated over 50 years of amazing style. The two sisters apparently hosted an after-soiree downtown, and wore this.

COME ON GIRLS!!!!!!
That is just ridiculous. You don't show up to your own party looking like you walked out of American Eagle.

Seriously, I'm really disturbed.

And what's with the matching shoes?? They obviously put some thought into the whole thing- like, "oh lets both wear the world's most boring matching black FLATS." Where's the drama? Where's the fashion? How dare they call themselves designers.....

WHY!?!

However, some of their guests to the chance to celebrate style and fashion and looked amazing.

Now, THAT'S how you do it. At least the sisters could have gone for more black?? It's classic, dressy, and slimming. Shouldn't they have known better!?!?!

At the inaugural ball last night the world witnessed the radiant presidential couple have their first dance to Beyonce's rendition of "At Last." Both looked stunning, with him and his bow tie and her so trendy asymmetrical Jason Wu dress. What a cute couple, they deserved that beautiful night.

I think white was a great choice for the both of them, it definitely was a classy, bi-partisan look, not tacky!

FASHION REPORT: Golden Globes

I would say the biggest trend this year on the red carpet is asymmetry for sure! Oh let us count the different ways to do a one-shouldered dress....Overall the color story was super muted, on trend for SP09, beiges, soft skintones, and Drew's pastel blue!

And the fashion winners are.....

Angelina wins first for me, even though she didn't take any awards home...her beauty is just undeniable and her look actually looks effortless, like she could have rolled out of a seashell or something. Two thumbs up!

Drew wins best supporting dress on the carpet- her look is really fun and she is probably the industry's sweetheart, and the only one who can get away with it!

The color, fit, and weight of this dress is beautiful, and I think rounds out the top three best dressed tonight!

Fucking hottie mega-star couples of the year awards go to....

The Pitts- the mega superstar couple supreme- her beauty looks effortless and its so funny to see how all the couples followed the same look- nude ladies with black suits!

Ash and Demi- again- these couples are just picturesque!

Happy New Year!
